Henry’s Uptown Bar – New Orleans
Place Category: Neighborhood Bars
-
Henry’s Uptown Bar is a continuously operated fourth generation family owned bar since 1900. First generation owners were Irish immigrants James Lee and Margaret Tully Lee. The second-generation owner was Edward Crone, son-in-law of James and Margaret Lee. Dorothy Crone, the daughter of Edward, married Henry Gogreve the bar’s namesake. They took ownership in 1946.
Henry operated the business well into his late 80’s and passed away in 2010 at the age of 91. Henry’s good-natured and colorful personality drew many loyal patrons and long-lasting friends to the “Cheers-like” atmosphere where, like the TV show, everyone knows your name. Henry’s Uptown Bar remains that way today under the ownership and management of Henry and Dorothy’s children.
